Internships are a valuable learning
experience for all applicants.
Employers are demanding that
applicants who are still at
University or
who wish to upgrade their skills,
have "real world" experience, and
internships are one of the best ways
for this to occur.
Before finding out about Internship,
you need to spend time reflecting
on your goals.
Consider these questions:
*What are your specific career
interests?
* Why do you want an Internship --
and what do you hope to gain
from it?
* What type of organization are you
interested in?
* What industry would be best for
your needs?
* Do you want University credit for
the internship?
Structure: (An Example)
Internship can begin with a two week
placement full time then
followed by one to two days per week
for a period
of six to twelve months.
Visa
Student visa
holders
are only eligible to do an
internship in the period
covered by their visa. Most student
visas have an extra 4 weeks at
the end of their visa after their
study is due to finish. Full-time
internships can only occur during
this time. Part-time internships
(maximum 20 hours per week) are also
possible on a student visa.
Visitor visa
holders
are only able to do an internship
for a maximum
period of 3 months. The holder is
entitled to work in an unpaid
position as long as the job is not
usually a paid position. This means
that the internship is usually in a
not-for profit organisation.
Working Holiday
visas
are for 12 months. The holder can
work (paid
or unpaid) for any one employer for
a maximum of 6 months. For
